Yakushima
Located in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, Yakushima is an island where ancient nature and unique culture thrive. In 1993, it was registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, attracting visitors from all over the world.Yakushima has a long history of mountain worship and is often called the "Alps on the Ocean" due to its rugged mountains. The island appears in historical records as early as the Heian period (794–1185), and logging of Yakusugi cedar trees began in earnest during the Edo period (1603–1868). Today, conservation efforts protect these ancient trees.
